Capturing the light in the darkness.
My name is Matthew Newman, I’m a photographer who specializes in wide-field astrophotography and night photography based out of Southern Oregon. I’ve enjoyed photography for most of my life. In 2014, I made a very deliberate choice to focus on photography seriously. I found myself inspired by photos of the night sky and sought out how to start shooting the night sky for myself.
As an avid outdoorsman, those skills have carried over to my night photography and the lengths I’m willing to go to capture a shot. Often times, I find myself planning a photograph that takes me on an adventure. Whether I’m hiking into the backcountry of Crater Lake in the winter by myself, or driving hours and hundreds of miles in search of clear skies to capture the light in the darkness. My passion for night photography has allowed me to share the night sky to those around the world who have never seen the stars before due to light pollution.
I pride my work on not compromising the experience. If you see my work, you can be assured that what you are seeing is real. I want people to realize that if you take the time to get away from the city lights and into nature that you can share these experiences and views.
In 2016 my account was featured by Instagram and their hundreds of millions of users. In 2018, I was shortlisted in the Royal Greenwich Museums, Astronomy Photographer of the Year contest. My work has been featured and shared by the U.S. Department of Interior, Crater Lake National Park, and Grand Tetons National Park, Canon USA, REI, Yakima and Earth Sky.
